TUF Launces Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign

Community Services Society of TUF in collaboration with Department of Community Medicine, UMDC conducted a seminar on “Breast Cancer Awareness” to mark Pink Ribbon day on October 17, 2019. It aimed to create awareness amongst the people. Guest speaker Dr Rafshan Sadiq, Clinical Oncologist from PINUM Faisalabad in her address told that breast cancer was one of the major cancers affecting one out of every nine women in Pakistan. “There is dire need to empower the young girls with the knowledge and techniques to detect breast cancer at early stage as early diagnosis is key to survival in breast cancer”, Dr Rafshan further added. She delivered a very informative lecture on the causes, prevention and treatment of the fatal disease. Dr Saira Saleem, Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon from Madinah Teaching Hospital in her address told that every year 40,000 females died of breast cancer in Pakistan. Prevalence of this deadly ailment is the highest amongst all types of cancers. Pakistan has one of the highest incidences of breast cancer in Asia, she added. She told that women below the age of 40 should carryout regular self-examination and those over 40 should undergo regular screening mammography. Interaction with patients recovered from breast cancer and skit performance by the students were the other features of the event. Later, Prof Dr Zahid Masood, Head Department of Community Medicine and Dr Sumaira Shehzad also led an awareness walk actively participated by faculty members and students.
