Seminar on “Medication Dosage Calculation Training Enhances Pediatric and Clinical Dosing Safety”

Seminar on “Medication Dosage Calculation Training Enhances Pediatric and Clinical Dosing Safety”

The School of Nursing at The University of Faisalabad conducted an educational seminar and workshop titled "Medication Dosage Calculation: Calculate Before You Medicate". The session focused on training fifth-semester Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students in precision dose calculation to eliminate clinical errors across hospital settings.

The seminar addressed the critical role of accurate mathematical calculations in administering oral tablets, liquid suspensions, injectable solutions, insulin, and intravenous (IV) fluid drip rates. Faculty members emphasized that minor calculation oversights or decimal-point errors can lead to severe drug toxicity or ineffective treatment, with elevated risks in pediatric care where dosing is calculated based on body weight (mg/kg).

To reinforce practical application, BSN students presented interactive wall displays and three-dimensional model stations detailing standard conversion ladders, IV flow rate formulas, and pediatric estimation rules such as Clark’s Rule, Young’s Rule, and Body Surface Area calculations. The training program included a faculty lecture, student presentations, an interactive question-and-answer session, and a clinical skit demonstrating real-world error prevention, order verification, and independent double-checking workflows.

The event, attended by nursing leadership including NS Sana Liaqat, highlighted six core safety steps: reading the order, converting units, applying standard formulas, double-checking calculations with colleagues, administering via the correct route, and completing immediate documentation. Participants concluded the workshop with the central guiding rule: "Right Dose, Right Patient, Right Time — Double check, calculate, be safe."
