Seminar on “World Blood Donors Day”

A seminar regarding “World Blood Donors Day” was organized by the Department of Pathology, University Medical & Dental College Faisalabad, The University of Faisalabad on 14th June.   Prof Dr A G Rehan, Director Madina Teaching Hospital was the Chief Guest of the event.

In his address, Dr Mubashar Ahamd, from Department of Pathology, said that according to Blood Transfusion Authority, Pakistan requires real time 7,800 blood donations every day. Only Islamabad and Rawalpindi have as many as 8,000 Thalassemia patients who need blood at any cost to save their lives.  In Pakistan, every year thousands of people die due to non-availability of blood, but only one percent of a population of 180 million, mostly young, donate their blood. The people who donate voluntarily are not more than 10 percent out of the total donors. Dr Mubashar said that aaverage 400 blood transfusions per month is required in Madina Teaching Hospital.

Prof Dr AG Rehan Inaugurated the “TUFIANS Blood Donation Society” at The University of Faisalabad. Dr Rehan assumed the responsibility as Chairman of the Society.  Ms Afia Batool Khan, students of MBBS final year, was selected as President while Ms Anam Ibrahim, student MBBS final year as Vice President along with other members of the Society from different departments of the TUF and UMDC.

In his address, Dr AG Rehan said, there is an acute dearth of blood donors in our society, this shortage could be met if tendency of voluntary blood donation is boosted. He said that according to medical research, act of donating blood is very healthful for the donor. He also emphasized that awareness campaign should be launched amongst the youth in this regard. He appreciated the efforts of Prof Dr Saadia Hameed, Head Department of Pathology, for establishing the Blood Donation Society at The University of Faisalabad.

Students of MBBS also presented a skit on the theme of Blood Donation, which was highly appreciated by all.

Prof Dr Ehsan ul Haq, Director Medical Education, UMDC threw light on the importance of voluntary blood donation activities and presented a vote of thanks.
