World Brain Tumor Day is observed on 8th June all over the world including Pakistan. It aims to create awareness amongst the public about this disease and its treatment.
Department of Surgery, University Medical & Dental College Faisalabad organized a seminar on “World Brain Tumor Day” presided by Prof Dr A G Rehan, Medical Director Madina Teaching Hospital and Head Department of Surgery.
Guest speaker, Prof Dr Tariq Ahmad, Head Department of Neuro Surgery, Allied Hospital, in his key note address said that a brain tumour is an abnormal mass of tissue in which some cells grow and multiply uncontrollably, apparently unregulated by the mechanisms that control normal cells. The growth of a tumour takes up space within the skull and interferes with normal brain activity. Tumor can cause damage by increasing pressure in the brain. He further explained that according to medical experts mostly people above 35 years suffer from it and usually after struggling for five years one-third patients die. He further elaborated that brain tumor in comparison to other kinds of cancer, is a hardly noticed disease, before it assumes serious dimensions.
Prof Dr AG Rehan in his address emphasised the need of public awareness in this context. He said that early diagnosis of the brain tumor increases the chances of cure manifold.
